UN May Ditch Mercator Map for Accurate Africa Depiction

A Shift in Global Perception?

The traditional Mercator projection map, a staple in classrooms and atlases for centuries, might soon be a relic of the past. The United Nations General Assembly is set to vote on a groundbreaking resolution, sponsored by Togo, that calls for the formal phase-out of this long-standing map. The core of the resolution lies in its aim to adopt a more accurate representation of the globe, particularly highlighting the true size of the African continent, which the Mercator map famously distorts.

Togo's Foreign Affairs Minister, Robert Dussey, spearheaded the initiative, revealing that the resolution is not just a solitary effort but is backed by a significant bloc of nations, including all 54 member states of the African Union. This widespread support underscores a growing global sentiment to rectify cartographic inaccuracies that have, for generations, presented a skewed view of the world.

The Mercator map, developed in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator, was designed primarily for navigation purposes. Its conformal projection maintains local angles and shapes, making it useful for sailors. However, this comes at the cost of significantly distorting areas that are farther from the equator. Africa, for instance, appears only slightly larger than Greenland on a Mercator map, when in reality, the African continent is approximately 14 times the size of Greenland. Similarly, South America is shown as smaller than Europe, despite being considerably larger.

Critics have long argued that the Mercator map perpetuates a subtle form of Eurocentrism, magnifying the perceived size and importance of Europe and North America while diminishing that of Africa and other equatorial regions. This visual bias, some believe, has contributed to historical underestimations of these continents' resources and potential.

The proposed UN resolution seeks to move towards more equitable and truthful cartographic representations, potentially adopting projections like the Gall-Peters or Winkel tripel, which offer better area accuracy. A 'yes' vote on Friday could signal a significant global acknowledgement of cartographic fairness and a step towards a more accurately perceived world map.
