US-Iran Talks Face Hurdles Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Analysts are approaching potential breakthroughs in US-Iran negotiations with a dose of caution, as tensions persist in the crucial Strait of Hormuz and uncertainties linger over the prospect of sanctions relief.

Rollercoaster Diplomacy

During a recent Al Jazeera panel, experts Dania Thafer of the Gulf International Forum and Martin Kelly of the EOS Risk Group acknowledged that any engagement between the two nations could signify progress. However, they emphasized the volatile nature of the process, describing it as a "rollercoaster." Several key issues remain unresolved, casting a shadow over the talks. Chief among these is the question of whether Iran's nuclear program will be a primary agenda item from the outset or deferred to later discussions.

Strait of Hormuz: A Complex Challenge

Martin Kelly highlighted Iran's significant control over the Strait of Hormuz through asymmetric warfare tactics, suggesting that military escorts for shipping might prove unviable. He referenced the short-lived Project Freedom and noted that weeks of military actions by the US and Israel have seemingly failed to diminish Iran's capabilities. Kelly concluded that "probably only diplomacy is the route to progression."

Sanctions and Blockades: A Contradictory Stance

Dania Thafer raised concerns about the logic of lifting oil sanctions while simultaneously maintaining a blockade. She articulated this apparent contradiction, stating, "one hand gives and the other hand takes." Kelly further underscored the difficulties by pointing out that three US warships recently transited the strait under intense bombardment, demonstrating the unsustainability of escorting commercial vessels in such a volatile environment. The plight of approximately 1,500 vessels and 20,000 crew members stranded in the strait was also addressed by Thafer, who argued that from a humanitarian standpoint, the onus should be on Iran to resolve the crisis.
